Why you need a rock and roll bed

Being able to turn rear seats into a bed with the pull of a lever means you have the flexibility to enjoy your van no matter the time of day or night. The extra seating allows you to take the whole family on road trips and, at the end of the day, it only takes seconds to convert those passenger seats into a comfortable bed.

When arranged as seats the bed is completely safe. All the seats have seat belts, and the frames are all crash tested which means they have met the most stringent safety standards.

Whether deployed as bed or as seating they are extremely comfortable and all our beds are finished with high-quality upholstery, which we manufacture ourselves.

Every rock and roll bed we supply is built in our own factory by experienced tradesmen. The frames are made from S275 grade steel and fully powder coated which makes them incredibly tough and hard wearing. And, as we mentioned, the upholstery is also made by us so we can provide bespoke finishing touches to make your bed that little bit extra special.

Our beds are fitted into your vehicle by our team of expert fitters who have worked on countless vans from manufacturers including VW, Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, and Mercedes.

We believe our beds are the best and safest you can buy in the UK. And to back up that claim all our rock and roll beds are covered by a 12 month return to base warranty.

M1 crash tested

Our Rock and Roll Beds are M1 Tested and Certified For Your Piece Of Mind

The best advice we can give you when looking for your new rock and roll bed is to ensure that it is built to the appropriate standards, and it MUST have an M1 certificate. Having an M1 certificate ensures you have taken the safety of the occupants and passengers seriously.

You will see rock and roll beds for sale which are labelled as ‘MOT compliant.’ However, this does not mean they are properly safety tested or are in fact safe.

Only a M1 tested rock and roll bed is safe to use in your campervan conversion or any other type of vehicle conversion. We can’t stress this enough.

Before purchasing, make sure your rock and roll bed is M1 crash tested. Ask to see the certificate. All reputable manufacturers and suppliers will be happy to show you their official certification.

Alpha Seating only supplies M1 tested rock and roll beds with certificates. All our rock and roll beds are tested to ECE Regulation 14.09 and Directive 76/115/ECC Amended by 2005/41/EC.

All of which means our beds are safe as houses and conform to the highest regulations. Feel free to call us for more details.

Benefits Of A Rock And Roll Bed

If you’re still on the fence and can’t decide whether to buy a rock and roll bed let’s look at the benefits from installing one in your van.

  • Space saving. We’ve already mentioned this but it’s worth repeating. A rock and roll bed allow most vans to be converted from passenger only into a sleeper without losing passenger capacity.
  • So easy to use. Anyone can put up and put away a rock and roll bed. The clever mechanism with its gas strut makes it so easy for anyone to use.
  • Take more of the family on trips. Normally you would have to sacrifice seating capacity to install a bed. But with a rock and roll bed doubling as passenger seating you can take more family and friends on your outings.
  • Turn day trips into long weekends. There’s no need to face that long drive home after an exciting day out. Simply pull out the rock and roll bed and extend your adventure by another night.
  • Comfort. No more trying to sleep on seats or pitching a tent near the van. With a rock and roll bed you can sleep comfortably on the dense foam cushions.
  • Custom finish. Our expert upholsterers can make any design or colour you need so you can completely colour coordinate your van.
  • British made. Don’t compromise on quality. Our rock and roll beds are made from the best materials in our own workshops.
  • Completely safe. You don’t want to be distracted by safety concerns when you’re on the road. Rest assured all our rock and roll beds are crash tested and have M1 certification.

Rock And Roll Bed Kits

As manufacturers we design, supply, and install rock and roll beds into most vehicles. However, we can also supply the bed for you to fit yourself if you wish. We will supply the frame only which leaves you the option to install it into your van.

This is usually only recommended for those who convert vans for a living or are very confident in their skills.

Although we are happy to supply you with a rock and roll bed kit, in most cases we would recommend that you leave the fitting of the bed to our team of experienced fitters.

However, please do feel free to call us on 01455 856 816 to discuss your requirements.

Rock And Roll Bed Upholstery

Unlike other manufacturers we make all our own upholstery. Our talented staff can make any custom design in a range of colours and a choice of fabric.

Our rock and roll beds have a foam cushion base of 75mm with a density of 33H. Most customers opt for leather upholstery which is comfortable, hardwearing, and easy to clean. We can, however, also offer vinyl in a wide range of colours as an alternative.

As well as fabrics our machinists can also deliver bespoke embroidery and stitching. Whatever the colour scheme of your van you can have a rock and roll bed to match.

Rock And Roll Bed Mattress Topper

The bed itself is made up of the seat cushions. It doesn’t have a separate mattress as such. However, the upholstered cushions are deep, supportive, and luxurious. You’ll be so comfortable. However, if you wish a mattress topper could be purchased but it’s not necessary. And, of course, you would have to find a place to store it.

Rock And Roll Bed Mechanism

Rock and roll beds are mounted on a frame with an ingenious mechanism which allows the user to convert passenger seats into a bed at the touch of a lever. It only takes a moment to convert seating into a bed (or vice versa) so there is no delay at the end of the day when you want to settle down or in the morning when you’re eager to get back on the road again.

Operating the bed is quite straightforward:

To convert seats in the bed, release the lever, pull the seat towards you, and then press down on the centre of the seat to lock into position.

To return the bed to a seat, release the lever and push the seat back until it locks.

Your rock and roll bed on rails

The secret to the bed operating so smoothly is that it is mounted on linear bearing rails. When raised or lowered the bed / seat glides along the rail to move smoothly into position.

What Is The Best Rock And Roll Bed For Me?

A 3/4 width bed is the best and most versatile solution. It’ll fit comfortably into most vehicles while still providing a generous sleeping area.

The real benefit of a rock and roll bed of course is its space saving qualities. Even a small van can have extra seating to accommodate more passengers yet within seconds those seats can be converted into a bed.

Where Can I Buy Rock And Roll Beds?

On the face of it, it’s so easy to do, isn’t it? Just go to Google and type in, ‘rock and roll bed for sale.’ Then filter by price so that the lowest is top of the list and click ‘buy.’ Sorted.

Well, not quite. In fact – don’t do that. Google is great for many things. If you want to know who won the World Cup in 1950 or when the next flight to Paris is, you can’t beat it. But don’t rely on it to find your new rock and roll bed.

You need to go to the experts.

FAQs

Rock and Roll Bed - Upright Position

What is a rock and roll bed?

If you have a van or campervan a rock and roll bed is not only a fantastic way to save space, but it’ll also help you get a restful night’s sleep. Comfortable seats during the day it transitions into a bed at night – or whenever you need a rest. In other words, rock and roll beds are seats which can be converted into a bed.

They can either be fold out or pull out depending on design and your vehicle. The bed will sit behind the front drivers and passenger seats.

How does a rock and roll bed work?

They are so easy to use. Seats are converted to a bed and vice versa simply by pulling or pushing a lever. It only takes seconds, and the bed will be large enough for a comfortable rest.

When the lever is released, the seats slide along the rail to lay flat. They are then locked into position to make the bed. To convert the bed back to seats, the lever is released again, and the cushions pushed up against each other to make the seats.

The entire process only takes a few seconds and because the mechanism is gas strut assisted it hardly takes any effort at all.

What is the size of a rock and roll bed?

Typical rock and roll bed dimensions are 1800 x 1090mm. You should note that this is the usual size for a 3/4 sized bed. These are the most popular beds and the most practical for a large number of vehicles.

A full width rock and roll bed will usually be too big for the available space which is why most converters, and our customers, opt for the 3/4 size.
